Why reusable products

The idea of washing and reusing a sanitary pad, or using a silicone cup, rather than a throw away tampon each month, is just a step too far for some women. For others though, there are lots of great reasons for picking the washable option. Reusable sanitary products save money, are better for the environment, can be healthier and in many cases are just more comfortable and reliable than their disposable alternative. Women today have an estimated 450 periods on average. That’s 450 lots of sanitary pads or tampons that have to be paid for and then thrown away. The idea of something that you buy once and then reuse is certainly tempting.

What reusable products?

If you feel like giving washable menstrual products a go, what are your options?

Washable pads

  • These are cloth pads, usually with an absorbent centre and a waterproof backing.
  • Usually shaped like disposable pads, they fasten around underwear with snaps on the wings.
  • Modern fabrics and fastenings mean that they have come along way since the rags that women would have used in the past.
  • They are usually trim and not too bulky.
  • Available in a range of sizes, they are suitable for everyone from young girls to older women and even for after giving birth.
  • Simple to care for, cloth pads are cleaned by washing them in a washing machine.
  • The fabric top layer, is often far more comfortable than disposable pads.
  • They are less likely to irritate or rub the skin.

Menstrual cup

  • Menstrual cups are worn internally, so are a good choice for people who use tampons.
  • They come in two sizes, for women who have given birth and/or are over 30 and those under 30 with no children.
  • Made of silicone, menstrual cups do not absorb liquid, but collect it instead.
  • Many people find that their periods get lighter and less painful when using a cup.
  • They can take a bit of practice to get right, but most people love their cup once they switch to one.
  • Cups last for around ten years or so, making them great value for money.
  • You can swim and play sport while using a menstrual cup.
