When it comes to cloth nappies, one of the questions that comes up time and time again is what are the best cloth nappies for newborns. You may think that all cloth nappies are equal and that all babies, no matter what their age, will suit the same type of cloth nappies, but this isn’t necessarily true. So what should you look for in a cloth nappy for a newborn baby and what type is the best?

What do you need to look for in a newborn nappy?

  • A good fit; newborns usually have very liquid motions, which can cause nappy leaks, so a nappy that fits really well is essential.
  • Easy to care for; nobody wants to deal with something that needs complicated laundering techniques when they are busy with a tiny baby.
  • Easy to use; having a tiny baby often means lack of sleep, a nappy that is easy to use certainly makes life easier.
  • Quick drying; newborns need changing often, a cloth nappy that dries quickly means that you don’t have to have hundreds to hand.
  • Natural fibres; tiny babies have very delicate skin, the more chemicals that you can avoid the better, natural fibres such as cotton are less likely to cause reactions and allergies.

Which are the best cloth nappies for newborns?

Personally I have always preferred a cloth nappy for newborns that requires a separate cover, a simple cotton nappy that has a separate cover over the top means that you can change the quick drying cotton nappy at each change, but only change the cover when needed. Ideally a cover should have a nice firm elastic around the waist and legs and double gussets help to keep everything in.
