Why everyone needs flat nappies

When I first started using cloth nappies on my babies, over nine years ago, I started out using flat cloth nappies. Over time I went on to try all sorts of different cloth nappies, but I’ve always gone back to and loved those flat cloth nappies. In fact, even though my four children are now long past the nappy phase, I still have, and use those flat nappies. Which is one of the reasons why everyone needs flat nappies.

Why everyone needs flat nappies

When you talk about cloth nappies, people are often put off by the idea of having to fold, old fashioned cloth nappies, but of course, most modern cloth nappies aren’t like that. Our pre-folds, for example are really easy to use, and don’t need complicated folding. Yet here I am explaining why everyone needs flat nappies. Why?

  • Flat nappies aren’t actually that hard to fold
  • You can just pad fold them
  • One nappy will fit any size of baby
  • They dry quickly
  • They have lots of other uses, other than as a nappy

Using flat nappies

Flat nappies are actually really simple to use. Like most things, you can be really complicated if you like, but you don’t have to be. There are many, many ways to fold flat nappies, have a look on you tube if you don’t believe me, but not all of them are hard to do. In fact, one of the simplest things you can do with a flat nappy, is to pad fold it, which simply means folding into a rectangle and placing it directly into the nappy cover. Alternatively you can fasten it around your baby and use a snappi to hold it on. No sharp nappy pins needed. I’ll try to share some of my favourite folds in future blog posts.

Other uses for a flat nappy

If you’re still wondering why everyone needs flat nappies, then perhaps I’d better share some of the other great uses for them. They have so many uses and are so handy, I’m not sure how people with small babies manage without them.

  • Use them as burp cloths
  • Make great small towels at bath time
  • Can be put under a spilly babies head so that the whole cot doesn’t need changing
  • Use as a change mat on the go
  • Protect floors during nappy free time
  • Tie on bib
  • Sitting on when toilet training
  • As a sun shade

The list goes on and on and after the baby days are over, they are great for cleaning up spills, washing windows and all kinds of jobs around the home.
