Cloth Maternity Pads
Cloth maternity pads were something that I really didn’t consider when I was pregnant with my first baby. Actually, if I’m honest, despite having used a menstrual cup for years beforehand, and although I was planning on using cloth nappies, I fell for listening to all the crazy things that they tell you that you need, and even went for disposable knickers! (Bad idea, don’t do it.) But by the time my second baby came along, I decided to give cloth maternity pads a go, and I’m so glad I did.
Why cloth maternity pads?
So, what’s so great about cloth maternity pads? Why would you want to use them? After giving birth, your lady bits can be so tender, what would you prefer against them? Rough paper and plastic of disposable pads or nice soft cloth? Believe me, there’s no comparison, that soft fabric is so much nicer against your poor battered bits.
The other huge advantage is that because you’re going to have to wear maternity pads for a good few weeks, using reusable pads, which are breathable, means that you’re less likely to be irritated by them. Some women find that when they use a disposable pad during the postpartum bleed, they actually develop an irritation a little like nappy rash. One of my midwives told me that she’d had quite a few women who’d had that problem and that the only way to deal with it, was to start using folded pieces of cloth instead, so using a washable pad means that you’re far less likely to have that problem in the first place.
Our Washable Pads
We sell a range of washable pads here at nappyneedz, including a large or night pad which is ideal for use as a postpartum pad. It’s large enough to work even in the early heavy stages. Some people prefer to use disposable pads to begin with, so that they don’t need to deal with washing straight away, but I didn’t find it too much of a problem. Our pads are particularly quick drying. We also have a regular pad which is fine once things settle down, or a liner for every day freshness.
