What's the point of pre-folds?
There are so many different types and brands of cloth nappies on the market, that you might be forgiven for not considering humble pre-folds. These rectangular cotton (although you can also get bamboo) nappies are one of the simplest and easy to use nappy styles that are available and you might find that they’re just what you’re missing from your cloth nappy experience.
What are pre-folds?
If you haven’t used pre-folds before, then you might be put off by the very idea of them. These simple cotton nappies that just sit, folded in three in a nappy cover, before being fastened around your baby don’t really look like the height of modern cloth nappy technology. Let’s face it, they’re not. Usually made from just cotton, (although we do also stock lovely, soft, absorbent ones made from bamboo) these nappies aren’t made with any newly discovered fabric, or with heaps of unusual and ground breaking features. But actually, that’s why they are such a good choice for cloth nappies.
Why are they so great?
But what is so great about pre-folds? Why should you get excited about them?
- They’re easy to use, just fold in three and that’s it, you’re done, pop them in a cover and then change just the insert when it’s wet of dirty, simple.
- They’re not expensive, you can build up quite a big stash of pre-folds, because they’re reasonably priced.
- You don’t need to change the cover every time, just the nappy.
- They’re bomb proof; people spend lots of time worrying that they’ve ruined their nappies by using the wrong laundry detergent or washing too hot, pre-folds can withstand all of that and more.
- They dry quick, being made of cotton and being flat, they don’t take a long time to dry, even in those wet winter months.
- You can get creative; if you want there are hundreds of different folds, both with and without a snappi, you can get creative with exciting covers, or even tie-dye the actual pre-folds.
- They’re handy; even when your child is out of cloth nappies, they make great window cleaning rags or wiping up cloths, because they’re so soft and absorbent.
Great in winter
One of the huge advantages of using pre-folds, is that they’re great in the winter months. They don’t take long to dry, even inside and because you just change the insert each time you can have a large amount of them to get you through those really wet days. If you’re not keen on using them in a cover, they also make really great inserts in lots of other nappies, such as pocket nappies, which means that you can keep them as back up inserts.
