Cloth nappies covered

If you’re looking for a water proof cover for your fitted, pre-fold or flat cloth nappies, then you might find yourself getting a little bit confused by the huge array of varieties on the market. What type do you need? Which one works the best? Does it really matter? But never fear, here at nappyneedz we’ve got cloth nappies covered, and I’m going to give you a quick run down on the types of cloth nappy covers out there, what the differences are, and what the advantages of these types of covers are. Before much longer you’ll have your cloth nappies covered too.

PUL Covers

PUL nappy covers are the standard nappy covers that you are likely to come across, made of a laminated polyester fabric they are easy to care for and to use. The usually wrap around your babies nappy (with them in it of course) and fasten with either velcro or plastic snaps. These covers are great for little ones who are using pre-fold or flat nappies in the early days, as you don’t have to change the cover with each nappy change. Yay, less washing.

I would recommend getting a cover with a double leg gusset, extra protection from poo blow outs, like our prorap nappy covers.

Advantages

• Easy to clean and care for
• No need to change at every nappy change
• Fairly cheap option
• Reliable

Disadvantages

• Not a natural fibre
• Breathable, but not as breathable as other options

Fleece nappy covers

Fleece nappy covers work in a slightly different way to pul covers, again they usually wrap around your little one, although there are pull up versions on the market. Fleece is a synthetic fabric (made from plastic) which is designed to be a lightweight fabric that mimics many of the qualities of wool. The fleece covers stop water from leaking out, but allow a little to evaporate. This makes them great for night nappies that your little one is in for a long time, as they are a more breathable option. They can be unsuitable for some newborns as they can cause damp patches in babies who lie in one position for a long period of time, they make great night covers for older babies and toddlers though. • A more breathable option
• Easy to wash and care for
• Great for night nappies

Disadvantages

• A synthetic fabric
• Not great for newborns as can result in compression leaks

Woollen covers

When it comes to night nappy covers, you can’t beat a woollen cover.  Wool naturally absorbs some of the moisture while repelling the rest, it allows a small amount to evaporate and being a natural fibre, helps regulate body temperature so it’s great when it’s very hot or very cold. The only real downside is that you have to treat them with lanolin every few months, and you can’t wash in the washing machine.

Advantages

• Natural fibre
• Breathable
• Helps to regulate temperature
• Can be totally NZ made from fibre to finished product

Disadvantages

• Does need extra care
• Can be expensive (although there are lots of free patterns on line if you know a knitter)
• Can’t be washed in the washing machine.
